Have you ever seen those outstanding fractal images with a lot of swirls and colors? Some of those were build simulating fractals or repeating shapes, where each shape is a reduced part of the whole, others were build mathematically. In this tutorial, we'll create a stylized fractal design using only Photoshop.

Step 1
Wikipedia define fractals as "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole." There are many ways to create fractals, most involve complex mathematical formulas, or fractal software programs, like Apohpysis for example, but with our good old Photoshop we can simulate the fractals behavior using repeating shapes and some useful keyboard shortcuts.

So, let's get it started. First we'll start with a 1600 pixels by 1200 pixels document, it's huge because I'm planning to use it as a desktop background. Then, show the ruler (Command + R) and change the unit to Percent. Now, draw two guides, one horizontal and the other vertical, and place them in the middle of the document. Next, using the Gradient Fill Tool, draw a radial gradient (#095261 - #000000), which should look similar to the image below.

Step 2
Now here's the only shape you'll draw: a circle, yes I'm not kidding, everything starts from a single circle. Draw it using the Ellipse Tool, hold the Shift key to create a perfect circle, and if you want hold the Alt key to draw it from the center. The circle size is 83 pixels by 83 pixels and it's located in the middle of the document. Now, create a new folder named "Fractal" and place the circle shape inside of it.

Step 3
Let's add some depth and volume to our shape. First, apply a Gradient Overlay that goes from dark blue to light blue, with a Drop Shadow, 50% Opacity, and a 0px distance, some Bevel and Emboss, including a texture. Just follow the images below.

Step 4
Now duplicate the circle layer by dragging the shape while pressing the Alt key, then merge the circle copy with a new blank layer to keep the style proportional. Resize the copy a little bit and place it 120 degrees from the middle of the document, you can use a triangle as a guide (I drew the triangle using the Polygon Tool).

Place the copy just over one of it's corners. Repeat this twice to get three small circles around the big circle. Delete the triangle and finally merge the four circles into a new layer called "Fractal 1" (If you want leave a copy of the original vector shape just in case).

Step 5
Here comes the fun part, we're going to repeat two steps several times. This is the first one, we'll Duplicate and then Free Transform. To get the right effect we need to use the shortcut Command + Alt + T. This command duplicates the existing image and allows to free transform the copy. Do not click anywhere and go to next step.

Step 6
While holding the Shift key, resize the "Fractal 1 copy" just a little bit, then rotate the copy a few degrees Clockwise. The trick to simulate the fractals is move the Transform center to the left, right, top, or bottom, depending on your needs. This time we'll move it a lot left. Finally, hit Enter.

Step 7
Now we're going to use another useful keyboard shortcut. Press Command + Shift + Alt + T to apply Free Transform again once and see the result. What happened? Photoshop takes the previous values of the Free Transform and apply them to the new object. If you repeat this command several times you'll get a nice fractal swirl. Photoshop creates a new layer each time you apply this command.

Step 8
Now, duplicate the entire "Fractal 1" folder, then select the "Fractal 1 copy" folder and hit Command E to merge the group. Now name the resulting layer "Fractal 2", then hide the original folder. Also, move the "Fractal 2" layer some pixels down and to the right from the middle of the document.

Step 9
Select the "Fractal 2" layer, then apply the Duplicate and Free Transform keyboard shortcut from Step 5 (Command + Alt + T), though change the transformation center to the middle of the document and rotate the image -120 degrees CCW.

Step 10
Now hit the Free Transform again keyboard shortcut from Step 7 (Command + Shift + Alt + T), doing this you'll duplicate the 120 degrees rotate transformation exactly. Finally, put the three layers into a new folder named "Fractal 2," Now, duplicate the folder and merge the copy, hide the original folder, and name the merged copy "Fractal 2."

Step 11
Duplicate and Free Transform (Command + Alt + T) the "Fractal 2" layer, keep the transformation center where it is, then while holding Shift + Alt keys, resize and rotate the copy just a little bit. Try to get something like the image below.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/11.jpg
Step 12
Change the "Fractal 2 copy" layer Hue/Saturation, use the values shown below. We'll make this one a little bit green.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/12.jpg
Step 13
Free Transform again the layer and adjust Hue / Saturation using these values.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/13.jpg
Step 14
Repeat the Free Transform again command (Command + Shift + Alt + T) as many times as you want, but always change the Hue and Saturation to get one green layer above a blue one. When you have finished, group all the layers into a new folder called "Fractal 3." Next, duplicate the folder and merge the copy, just like in the previous steps. Name the copy "Fractal 3."

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/14.jpg
Step 15
Add a dark Drop Shadow to the "Fractal 3" layer.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/15.jpg
Step 16
Duplicate and Free Transform (Command + Alt + T) the "Fractal 3" layer, rotate the copy a few degrees CW, resize it a little bit making the copy smaller, and change the transformation center to the top-left, then hit Enter.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/16.jpg
Step 17
Free Transform again (Command + Shift + Alt + T) a lot of times to get something like this. You can repeat these steps as many times as you want, but I'll stop the design right here.

http://psdtuts.s3.am...Fractals/17.jpg

In this tutorial, we're going to create some really sharp-looking glow effects using a combination of layer styles, the Pen Tool and Color Blending. The end effect is quite stunning and hopefully you'll pick up some tips you didn't know before.
Step 1:
As with pretty much every tutorial I've ever written, we begin with a radial gradient. This one is pretty harsh and goes from a reddish brown color to black. Here are the exact color codes:

Foreground color - #922f00
Background color - #000000

Step 2:
In this tutorial, we actually need a pretty intense center, so what we'll do is duplicate the layer we just made and set the one above to a blending mode of Color Dodge. There are a few types of blending modes, darkening ones, lightening ones, colorizing ones and inverting ones. Color Dodge is probably the strongest of the lightening ones. As you can see in the screenshot, it produces a pretty full-on center.

Step 3:
Now in our glow effect, it helps to have a nice textured background. So we are going to create a sort of smoky haze. To do this, create a new layer, then make sure you have white, #ffffff, and black, #000000, selected as your background and foreground colors.

Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. This will give you the same random cloud pattern as above.

Step 4:
Now set the opacity of your layer to Overlay and 30% transparency. In some instances this would be enough, but for our needs we want it even smokier looking!

So go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and use default settings of 4 and 7 for detail and smoothness respectively. Actually you can probably mess around with those if you want, but the defaults seem to be fine.

When you're done, the result should look a lot smokier (once its overlayed at 30% transparency that is). You can see the result in the background of the next screenshot.

Step 5:
Now before we can start making glows, we need to have something to glow. Here's where we break out the pen tool. If you have used the pen tool much I suggest playing around with it a little. There are some tricky things you can do with shortcuts, but for this tutorial you don't need those.

In fact all we want to achieve are some nice curves. Fortunately this isn't too hard. I find the trick is not to use too many points. Instead rely on the Pen Tool's natural curving and drag the mouse out for each point so you get a big angle. In this S-curve shown above, I've only used three points, the starting point, the end point and one in between to give it the bend.

Step 6:
Once you have a nice curve, create a new layer. Then click on the Paintbrush Tool ( and choose a very thin, hard brush. As you know, soft brushes are the blurry ones and hard brushes are more solid. In this case I suggest using a thickness of 3.

Note that you can have any color selected as your brush color because we'll go over it with a layer style shortly.

Step 7:
Now switch back to the Pen Tool. You must switch tools in order to do this next bit.

Then right-click and select Stroke Path. A little dialog box will appear as in the screenshot. Choose Brush and make sure there is a tick next to Simulate Pressure. This is important as it will give your curve tapered ends which will make it rock!

Next right click again and select Delete Path.

Step 8:
You should now have something like the above. Just a thin, cool swishy thing.

Step 9:
Now we add some glows. The easiest way to make our glows is to use layer styles. And the best way to tell you what layer styles to use is to tell you to download the sample Photoshop PSD from the bottom of this page and then open it up and look through them there.

In a nutshell, I've added two sets of glows. To do this I first use Outer Glow and then because I want a second glow, I change the Drop Shadow settings so that it becomes a glow (you can do this by reducing the Distance and changing the blend mode to something like Color Dodge)

Oh and also I've used a Color Overlay to make the item white so that its like the center of an intense glow.

Step 10:
So now you have the same line but with a cool glow coming off it. The beauty of using a layer style is that you can copy and paste it to other layers. To do this you just right-click the layer and select Copy Layer Style then create a new layer and right-click and choose Paste Layer Style.

Step 11:
So now repeat the same process a couple of times to make more squiggly lines.

In this instance, I made one a little thicker by changing the paint brush size before I did the Stroke Path bit of the process. I also made a third line and erased part of it and sorta made it join the other two to look like a cool triangular shape.

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/12.jpg
Step 12:
Here I've added some text in and applied the same layer style to the text layers.

It's important to pay lots of care and attention to your text. When you're first starting out, use simple fonts and play with spacing between letters, words and sizes. You can achieve a lot with just some small tricks. Here I've contrasted the three words by making Glow a lot larger and in regular casing, then made Advanced and FX much smaller, with greater space between the letters and all caps.

You can control spacing with text using the Character window. If it isn't already open go to Window > Character and it should appear. Mess about with the different settings until you learn what each controls.

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/13.jpg
Step 13:
Now we add some particles. To do this, create a new layer then select a tiny paint brush - size 3 - and just paint some dots on. It helps if they are clustered towards the center of the glow so that it looks like they are emanating from there.

You can make some of the central ones larger by doubling over on them with a second paint brush dab.

Then paste our Glow layer style on to that layer too!

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/14.jpg
Step 14:
Now that's looking pretty cool, but it will look even cooler if we give it some subtle coloring instead of this super gaudy red.

So create a new layer, and using a radial gradient, draw a blue to white gradient as shown.

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/15.jpg
Step 15:
Then set that layer to a blending mode of Color and change the opacity to 50%.

You'll see that it turns the image kind of bluish. I think that's looking much cooler already, but just to go that extra step I also created a couple of extra layers, one with some faint yellow and one with faint purple. You can see them in the screenshot above.

I set each layer to blending mode of Color and thin opacities so that they all fade together.

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/16.jpg

Step 16:
And there you have it: advanced glow effects with a cool color blend and subtle smoky background combined make for a pretty great effect.

Just remember to experiment with settings and try applying the glow to different things to see how it turns out. And try different color combinations, some surprising combinations turn out really beautiful. Good luck!

http://psdtuts.com/t...ncedGlow/17.jpg

Step 1
The first thing you will have to do is create the 3D text. To do that you can use Illustrator. It has a very nice 3D filter and it will work just fine.

Type the text you want and go to Effect>3D>Extrude & Bevel. Change the Position to Off-Axix Bottom. Then you just rotate the X,Y, and X Axis until you get the result you want. Follow the image below for reference. Tip: It's very important that you select Draw Hidden Faces. Otherwise Illustrator will not create some faces that will be very important for the end result.

Step 2
Now you will have to expand the 3D effect in order to select and change the color of the faces you want. Go to Obejct>Expand Appearance. First select the top faces, and move them away. Then select just the outer faces and fill them with black.

Step 3 - Photoshop
Create a new document in Photoshop and fill the background with Black. Copy the 3D text without the top faces and paste it in Phothoshop. Position it in the middle of the document and reduce its size.

Step 4
With the Magic Wand Tool (W) select the black faces and delete them.

Step 5
Go to Images>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation, change the color of the text to Orange.

Step 6
Make sure you have black and white for the background and foreground colors. Then go to Filter>Render>Clouds... After that, resize the layer. Make it smaller just to cover the word. Then just change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge

Step 7
Now create a new layer on top of the others and fill it with black, then with the Brush Tool ( select a regular brush, very soft, like 0% hardness, and white for the color. Then just paint over some ares to make them brighter. (1-4)

Step 8
Apply a Layer Style to the 3D word, use Stroke with 1px Size, 40% Opacity and Black for the color.

Step 9
Let's add a Gradient Overlay to the background. It will be necessary in order to make some of the light effects work. Use Radial for the Style and use Black and #412e1d(brown) for the colors.

Step 10
Now duplicate the 3D layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur use 30px for the Radius. Position this layer beneath the Hell layer.

Step 11
With the Ellipse Tool(U) create an ellipse like the image below, then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 70px for the Radius. After that, just change the Blend Mode to Overlay.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_11.jpg

Step 12
Create a new layer on top of the Backgroud layer. Fill it with white and go to Filter>Texture>Texturizer. Use 60% for Scaling, 15 for the Relief and Top for the Light. Change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_12.jpg

Step 13
Here I wanted to add a nice texture to the floor, so I used a wooden texture. You can find the one I used at http://www.sxc.hu/photo/947335. Or you can check the Great Wood Textures at http://abduzeedo.com...t-wood-textures.

Paste the image in the document and resize it to make it cover the gradient area. Then go to Edit>Transform>Distort. Move the vertices to apply a nice perspective to the wood. After that just change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_13.jpg

Step 14 - Fire
Now let's create the fire. To do that I will use what I learnt from the awesome Dramatic Text on Fire Effect in Photoshop by Collis from PSDTUTS.com. Basically we will get a photo of fire with flames and use the Warp tool to create different variations of the flame.

Download the image at http://www.sxc.hu/photo/985088 and paste it in the document. Make sure that it's in front of the other layes. Then with the Eraser Tool (E) delete some areas. Also go to Edit>Transform>Warp and distort the flame to get a nice effect. Then just change the Blend Mode to Screen.

http://www.abductit....p_14_-_Fire.jpg

Step 15
Create more flames using the same technique, you can even use the Smudge Tool ® to change the form of the flames.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_15.jpg

Step 16
Create a new layer in front of the other layers and go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Make sure you have selected Black and White for the Background and Foreground colors. Then you can resize the layer a bit to make the smoke smaller. With the Eraser Tool (E) delete some areas and just leave smoke over the text. Then change the Blend Mode to Soft Light.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_16.jpg

Step 17
Repeat the same thing as the previous step, this time however use Hard Light for the Blend Mode. This step will create a more volumetric smoke to the image.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_17.jpg

Step 18
Let's create the cracks on the floor. To do that let's use another image from sxc.hu, you can download it at http://www.sxc.hu/photo/995884. Place the image on the document and resize it to cover the gradient area. Then like we did before with the wood texture, go to Edit>Transform>Distort. Distort the image until you get a nice perspective, then change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_18.jpg

Step 19
This step might look complicated but it's not. Actually it's quite simple. Duplicate the crack layer and change the blend mode to Normal again. Go to Image>Adjustments>Invert, then go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. This will invert the colors so what was once black will now become white and vice-versa. Now go to Image>Adjustments>Levels and use 40, 1.00, and 226.

Right after that select the Magic Wand Tool (W) and select the black part of the image. Then go to Select>Similar, Photoshop will select all the black from the layer. Then delete the blacks and you will have the cracks in white. Now just apply a Layer Style. Go to Layer>Layer Styles>Color Overlay. Use #ffba00 for the color.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_19.jpg

Step 20
Select the Eraser Tool (E) with a big soft brush, use 0% hardness. Then start deleting the layer. Leave just a small area close to the word. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use a small value 0.5%. Then the last thing here, move this layer 2 pixels left and bottom, so it will create a nice 3D effect.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_20.jpg

Step 21
Here you can duplicate the yellow crack layer and apply a another gaussian blur, this time use a greater value and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. If you want you can duplicate it one or two more times to make the effect brighter.

http://www.abductit....hop/Step_21.jpg

Step 1:
First of all create a new document in Photoshop. The canvas size is your choise, i'll use 1024x768px. The size basicly depends on your screen resolution.

Step 2:
Now we'll need a landscape picture taken at night. You can find the picture I used HERE. Now create a new layer and name it "trees". Paste your picture and scratch it with the Free Transform Tool (ctrl+t) till it reaches the canvas' edge. With the Magic Wand Tool (w) click on the black trees. You'll get a selection. Press ctrl+shift+i, this way you select everything but the trees. Delete the sky. If you have tha patience, you can create the selection with the Pen Tool (p) too.You should have something like this:

Step 3:
The next step is finding the background. You can find the picture I used HERE. Off course you can use an other if you don't like it. Create a new layer calles "stars" behind the one called "trees". If the picture is too small, scratch it with Free Transform Tool (just like in Step 2). We have this so far:

Step 4:
In this step we'll add the lights to the sky. Create a new layer called "aurorabottom" between "trees" and "sky". Grab a thick brush and paint the area over the trees. Use the color #caee05. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and apply it on the layer with 20px. Set it's blending mode to hard light and set opacity to 50%.

Step 5:
Now we'll add more color and layers. The next layer will be "auroramiddle" behind "aurorabottom". Grab this color: #b3ea8d and paint the area over and behind the lights made in the previous step. Add some blur to the layer. Go to Filter>Blur and apply the Motion blur and Gaussian blur. You can see the settings on the picture below. Set blending mode to Lighten and oacity to 90%.

Step 6:
Ok, I think it is the hardest step. We'll create a new brush. Create a new document with transparent background. For the size I used 30x300px. Grab the Pen Tool (p) and put 2 anchor points to your picture (as senn on the picture). With the Path Selection Tool (a) right-click on the path and select Stroke Path. In the pop-up window select brush and check Simulate Pressure. Make sure your foreground color is black and u use a brush around 9px, then press Ok. Delete your path and go to Edit>Define Brush Preset. Give a name to your brush and press Ok. Now select your brush that you just created and set it up in the Brushes menu (you can find it on the right of your screen, or in Window>Brushes (f5). Use the settings you can see in the picture below.

Step 7:
It's time to use our new brush. Pick color #8cb37c and draw the shape you can see on the picture. Go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. Use an angle around 65. Set this layer's blending mode to Color Dodge.

Step 8:
Now that we have all the green layers, it's time to add some purple. Make a huge spot to the middle of the sky with #953f5e. You can use any kind of brushes. Make sure this layer is above the green ones. Name it "purple1" or something like that. Apply Gaussian blur on this layer with 100px radius. Change it's blending mode to Exclusion.

Step 9:
Pick this color: #92566b, use the same brush, but set the size around 350-400px, and draw something around the middle of the sky. Off course you hvave to do it on a new layer, "purple2". Give the layer a Motion Blur effect with 90° and 100px. Set the blending mode to Overlay. We're almost done.

Step 10:
Here comes the final touches. we have to do another brush with the same shape hat we made in Step 6. We do the same options except we check Scattering and Dual brush. Use the settings that i used (you can find it on the picture below). With white color paint some lines with the new brush around the purple area. Remember to create a new layer for it. I call mine ("whitestripes" )Got to Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur (I promise it's the last time), set 5px and press Ok. Set the layer's opacity to 50%.

Step 11:
Finally create a new layer, go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Make sure you have the default black and white colors set. Set the layer's blending mode to Soft light and lower the Opacity. I used 25%.
